Ome Kobus... / Uncle Kobus...

Veel Nederlandstalige nummers over Hawaï die de tand des tijds hebben doorstaan, zijn er niet te vinden. Je had de Waikiki Hawaiians uit Rotterdam in de jaren '30 en '40. 

Op Youtube is daar nog wel iets van terug te vinden. (zoeken is op eigen risico 😆)

Het enige nummer dat nog wel eens boven komt drijven is 'Ome Kobus' van De Amazing Stroopwafels.

There are not many Dutch songs about Hawaii that withstood the test of time. There was a band named the Waikiki Hawaiians from Rotterdam in the 1930's and 40's. 

There's still something from them on Youtube (search at own risk 😆 ).

The only song that bubbles up every now and then is 'Uncle Kobus' from The Amazing Stroopwafels.

For the Non-Dutchies this needs some extra explaining. 😎

The line: 'Ome Kobus heeft zijn linkerbeen verloren, in Hawaii, aan een haai' translates as 'Uncle Kobus lost his left leg in Hawaii to a shark'. 

That might not sound funny at all, but the Dutch word for 'shark' is 'haai'. And 'haai' rhymes with 'Hawaii', so trust me, it's funny. 😂 
 

Ome Kobus mag dan zijn linker been verloren zijn, wij hebben ons hart verloren hier.

We hebben 8 nachten mogen doorbrengen hier en in die tijd twee van de eilanden mogen proeven.

En de conclusie: Hawaï is een paradijs op aarde.

Het voelt soms totaal on-Amerikaans aan, maar vaak toch ook weer wel.
Het is prachtig op héél veel diverse manieren.

En de mensen hier lijken hier net iets vaker te glimlachen, dan op het vaste land.
Maar dat ik me ook verbeelden natuurlijk. 😇

Uncle Kobus lost his left leg here, we lost our heart here.

We spend 8 nights here and had the priviledge to have a taste of two of the islands.

And the conclusion: Hawaii is a paradise on earth.

It sometimes feels totally un-American, but often is was 100% USA.

It's beautiful is so many ways.

And the people seem to smile just a bit more here, than on the mainland.

But maybe i'm just imagining that. 😇

Zonder de uitnodiging van Billie en Reiner zouden we hier niet geweest zijn.

Zij nodigden ons uit en hebben de accommodaties geregeld hier. Zowel op Maui als op Kauai heerlijke plekken. Veel samen opgetrokken hier en veel, héél veel gezien. Een prachtige tijd.

They invited us and took care of the accommodations here. Both on Maui and Kauai we stayed at wonderful places. We spend lots of time together and talked a lot. A beautiful time.

Hawaï is een van die plekken die eigenlijk niet in foto's te vangen is. 

Je moet er eigenlijk bij zijn om de beelden in je op te kunnen nemen.

Maar aangezien dit een weblog is, plemp ik ze hier toch maar neer. 😁

Hawaii is one of those places that pictures simply can't grab.

You have to be there to absorb the images yourself.

But this being a weblog, i will dump them here anyway. 😁
